assimilate
With all the talk about how people ought to assimilate to the American way, all I can think about is robots.
Robots who are programmed to move and behave in a certain way. Robots with sterile exteriors and interiors hearts. Robots with blind allegiance. Robots without will.
What would these robots be programmed to do if they were to assimilate to the American way?
Support the president no matter what?
Speak out no matter what?
Sing and dance and raise their hands in church?
Quietly meditate while an organ plays a 150 year old tune?
Go to college, find a sweetheart, get married, reproduce and buy a house?
Start a business that became a the love of their life?
Proclaim God Bless America but All Lives Matter?
Proclaim Black Lives Matter but God Bless the Whole World?
Attend church and find community with fellow believers?
Go to protests and find community with fellow believers?
Enjoy their favorite pastime of baseball or football?
Choose doing nothing at all as their favorite pastime?
Believe that being a stay-at-home mom is being a role model?
Accomplish all of their school and career goals as way to be a role model?
Says to be an American is to be a Christian?
Insists that to be American is to have freedom of religion?
If there’s a theme in all of this, I would say it’s the freedom to choose.
And if that's the case, why are we so obsessed with assimilation?
