I'm Going to be an Average Student

I don’t know a me who isn’t striving to the top.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have good test taking skills and can fake my way through essay writing. I know how to play the game.

In learning situations, my goal has most often been about checking off the to do list and getting the grade. Grade A, that is.

But, in my latest endeavor as a Seminary student, I’m going to be average.

I’m going to blend in. Be unmemorable. Do the minimum.

I am giving up striving for a pat on the head from someone else. And I’m letting go of being in a silent competition with everyone around me.

What I’d rather do is take my time. I want to read the materials for real, absorbing them rather than skimming to get to the end goal.

I want to not know rather than thinking I have all of the answers and tuning out.

I’m going to listen to my peers more than I speak up to impress and mute more than monologue.

Most times I’ll do my homework but sometimes I’ll choose to take a walk in nature instead.

I’ll always take what I’m learning seriously but will seriously believe that play honors God too.

I will celebrate my C’s because my new normal is going to be calm, carefree, compassionate toward myself.

I’m going to be an average student so I can savor the experience of it all.
