I wrote a lament on Good Friday, titled "Crucify Them!" Thank God for an Easter response.
AN EASTER RESPONSE
He is Risen!
Welcome the immigrant
Fleeing for their life
Especially if they have broken English
Make a mistake
Or desperately miss their land
He is Risen!
Feed the poor
Making minimum wage
Certainly, we could try harder
Give more
And live like Christ in our generosity to them
He is Risen!
Embrace the gays
For whom, and how, they love
There are many ways in this place
They expand our boxes
And enrich us when we are open
He is Risen!
Celebrate the different
They make us more beautiful
With their quirks and ticks and bodies
They’re a wonder
Diversity is a tapestry woven by God's design
He is Risen!
Listen to the protests
Crying out in despair for America
We question power, police, and politicians
Instead we shout
Our Savior is making us love again
A GOOD FRIDAY LAMENT
Crucify Them!
Cast out the immigrant
Fleeing for their life
Especially if they dare have broken English
Make a mistake
Or not be grateful enough to be on our land
Crucify Them!
Deny the poor
Making minimum wage
Certainly they could try harder
Sleep less
We won’t sin with our generosity for you
Crucify Them!
Condemn the gays
How dare they love
There is only one right way in this place
It fits in our box
You embarrass us when you open it
Crucify Them!
Erase the different
You make us uncomfortable
With your quirks and ticks and bodies
You’re a pity
Normal is compliance and quiet
Crucify Them!
Silence the protests
Not in America
We bow to power, police, and politicians
Stay quiet
Our Golden Calf is making us great again
