Pledges

Many have been posting about the hypocrisy of reciting the line "with liberty and justice for all" while the current government disregards that promise.
As a child, I had no emotional connection to the Pledge of Allegiance that I was forced say every morning in my country schoolroom. It never made sense to me to promise myself to a country or a flag.
It struck me yesterday, while singing "and they'll know we are Christians by our love" that this is the pledge we are supposed to make. Hand over heart.
This was the anthem of my most formative childhood spaces, sung by those who were living into the pledge to walk and work with each other. Side by side.
"And we'll guard each man's dignity and save each man's pride" not because we are some superior nation, uniquely ordained by God, but because if we claim to be Christians, they'll know it by our love.
