The Oxygen Mask Myth

I've said it, even taught it to my students -
Put your oxygen mask on first...
We've treated that belief like a moral code, a biblical instruction.
But if this is what morphed into the "America First" belief system,
I want to rewrite the rule.
I'm ready to give away all of the oxygen masks when I read articles like this: Children die as USAID aid cuts snap a lifeline for the world’s most malnourished.
I keep imagining myself traveling with my children on a plane that is going down. What I know for sure is that I would put the mask on my children first. On any child first. And it sure as heck wouldn't matter if they had pledged their allegiance to The United States of America - or, in our case, allegiance to Donald J. Trump.
Sometimes the best way to breathe easier is to help someone else catch their breath.
As America takes care of itself, while preparing for Trump's $45 million dollar birthday parade, people around the world are gasping for oxygen.
