we don't talk about diversity

I built a series of courses alongside a beautiful team of professionals -
people who have had the real, anguishing life experience of
being discriminated against
hated
misunderstood
left out
demonized
targeted
underestimated
told they aren't "real".
The courses are designed to help health coaches consider the assumptions they make in working with clients. Asking questions of themselves like:
What assumptions have I made based upon their appearance?
When do I make generalizations instead of getting curious about the individual?
What biases do I have about their choices based on my own values?
What do I assume to be possible for this person because it is possible for me?
Which stereotypes have I unconsciously applied to this person?
How is their perspective impacted by their culture and traditions?
What name do they prefer to be called?
These self-inquiries are critical for addressing and eliminating bias when we are serving our clients and essential for relationship building.
But now, laws that are being implemented across the country to prohibit conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion put these courses at risk.
I'm sickened that I'm about to embark on a battle to prove that talking about someone's humanity, or honoring it, is critical to healthcare.
Gosh, aren't these questions we should be asking in any relationship?
